Burton Glee Club in Debut Vocal Festival
Thursday, March 8th, 2012The adult Burton Glee Club which formed in June 2011 decided they wanted a challenge this year and so entered into the Burton Vocal Festival at The Brewhouse Arts Centre in Burton on Trent.
We started preparing for the competition in January 2012 with the song Somebody To Love by Queen. It was a lot of fun and hard work with some tricky harmonies. The piece consisted of 4 soloists and at one point in the piece it splits into 5 harmony parts with a solo line over the top! Quite an achievement with only 20 in the choir! However, our musical director Sue Arthur broke it down step by step for us.
On the day, we were all really nervous, especially as having only done a charity sing in the Octagon Centre before, this was a big challenge! We all stuck together and had a fun vocal warm up outside in the rain which left us all on a high!
There were 6 other groups as well as us competing on the day. When it was our turn we got up on stage and gave it our all!
We are so proud to say that we came third out of seven! Gaining 86/100 for our performance. Our feedback was great too: ”Good ensemble blend. Strong rhythmic drive. Good stylistic awareness of this genre of music.” We just need to quieten down when the soloists are performing
Burton Glee Club for adults rehearse every Monday evening at 7:30-9:00pm at The Brewhouse in Burton. Our children’s Glee Club for 9-16 years is at 6:15-7:15pm every Monday evening also at The Brewhouse. If you would like further information or to come along and have a sing with us please call Cat on 01283 531635.

Dear Parent/Guardian,
A Christmas Carol is being performed at The Brewhouse Arts Centre in Burton on Trent in January 2012 and we would like to offer our students the chance to see some live musical theatre.
The musical opens as carols are being sung and lamps are glowing. Christmas is near and all are awaiting the early close of the Exchange so the holiday can officially start. From bankers to charwomen, all wish each other “A Jolly Good Time,” looking forward to the holiday fun ahead. Later that evening Ebenezer Scrooge is awakened on Christmas Eve by three spirits who reveal to him his own miserable existence, what opportunities he wasted in his youth, his current cruelties, and the dire fate that awaits him if he does not change his ways.
Will Scrooge manage to alter his future in time to enjoy Christmas day?
It’s a great chance for you to join your child and so could be a theatre trip for all the family if you wish. However, for those of you who cannot attend but still wish your child to go along then we have organised for 30 children to meet the Theatre Cats staff at The Brewhouse Arts Centre in Burton on Saturday 21st January 2012 at 2pm for a 2:30pm start. Tickets are £9.00 each. We can only offer 30 supervised places due to limitations with staff. All tickets will be on a first-come-first-served basis. The performance will finish at approximately 4:45pm and parents of the supervised children will be asked to come into the Brewhouse to collect their child/children.
Please note however, that due to the musical being of a scary nature e.g. ghosts, we are only offering supervised places to children aged 10 and over. You can obviously come along as a family with a younger child if you wish.
Please return the slip below asap in an envelope clearly marked with your child’s name and full payment enclosed. Please make cheques payable to ‘Theatre Cats.’ The final deadline for all ticket requests is Saturday 12th November 2011 as tickets are selling quickly.
Kind regards
Catherine Budworth

100% Exam pass rate – 3rd year running!
Monday, July 18th, 2011Forty-eight children from the Swadlincote, Burton and Derby areas are celebrating this week after passing their Speech and Drama exams with flying colours!
The children aged between 6-15 from Theatre Cats Stage School which has classes in Burton, Newhall and Derby, took Drama exams run by Trinity College London…and every single student passed for the third year running!
They had to prepare monologues, mimes, recite poetry from memory, discuss their chosen pieces and engage in story-telling to pass the exams. Some even had to write their own pieces and improvise during their exams.
The exam process was purely optional for every student and forty-eight students decided to take the plunge. “The two exam days were a huge success with every single student achieving the required pass-mark,” said Catherine Budworth, Principal of Theatre Cats. “The staff were absolutely thrilled when we heard the news. This is our third year with 100% pass rate and this year 46% of the children gained distinctions – the highest score possible. We look forward to presenting the certificates to the students in September. They have all worked so hard.”
Theatre Cats offers theatre classes for 1-16 year-olds in Staffordshire and Derbyshire along with Glee show choirs for children and adults as well. It currently has 16 classes throughout Derby, Burton and Swadlincote and are hoping to open another 8 classes across Uttoxeter, Ashby and Derby from September 2011. The stage school is also running a Oliver Musical Theatre Summer School for 5-16 year-olds from 15th – 19th August in Littleover, Derby. Call 01283 531635 to book a place. Their Newhall Summer School is already full.
Catherine Budworth continued to say: “We at Theatre Cats pride ourselves on being a friendly and exciting stage school. Our aim is to encourage confidence and self-esteem through the performing arts. Learning through these art forms allows children to explore their creativity and have fun whilst leaving their shyness and worries behind. Our team are dedicated to ensuring that children receive the very best tuition in a fun and safe environment.”
Although several Theatre Cats classes are already full, enrolment is now open for available September classes. More information as well as a coupon for a free taster class, simple complete the Information Request Form.

FAQ
Q: Do I need to be able to have a really good singing voice?
A: No, just a desire to make music and have fun. A lot of what we will be doing will be choral where many voices are singing together to create a beautiful sound.
Q: Do I have to sing on my own?
A: No. Not if you don’t wish to. Some of the songs will have solos but these will be given to those who want to sing on their own.
Q: What is harmony?
A: Harmony is when you have a number of ‘tunes’ that are sung together at the same time. It comes from the Greek verb ἁρμόζω (harmozo) which means: “to fit together, to join.”
Q: What is unison?
A: This is where several singers are singing the same melody together.
Q: Will I have to audition to join?
A: No. Auditions can intimidate people and we want our Glee Choir to be welcoming for everyone.
Q: How much will it cost?
A: Your first class is FREE! Subsequent classes will be £5 per week, however, if you pay for 4 weeks then you will get the 5th week free! Existing Theatre Cats students and their parents it will cost just £3.00. If you introduce a friend to Glee Club and they enrol after their free class you will then get your next class half price!

Monday, September 6th, 201060 students from Theatre Cats Stage School have recently
rehearsed and performed a show within a week. Children between 5
and 16 years of age came to the summer school every day to learn
all the songs, dances and acting skills to be able to perform
the stage version of The Wizard of Oz.
The summer schools ran from Monday 2nd to Friday 6th August at
The William Allitt School in Newhall and Monday 23rd – Friday 27th
August at Heatherton Community Centre in Littleover. On the last
day there was a performance to family and friends to showcase the
talents of the youngsters. ‘It’s amazing what you did in just four
days. The children were obviously really enjoying themselves’ said
one parent.
The children were so dedicated and they enjoyed every second.
We were very proud of them.
